Since I’m a fan of healthful shakes, my patients are always asking me for my favorite recipes. Everyone adds fruits and berries to their smoothies, but I have several secret ingredients that really rev up the power of my shakes.

I call this one the “Natural Physician Shake”—and it’s not only loaded with protein, but also essential fatty acids and healthful flora. It will boost your energy—and these ingredients also promote a lean body. Making a health shake is easy to do—you just need a blender.

You can drink this shake as an energy-boosting breakfast alternative… a great midafternoon snack… or as a before or after-workout drink.

Natural Physician Shake

Blend…

  • 1 to 2 cups unsweetened almond or hempseed milk (calcium enriched)
  • Half of one banana
  • ½ to 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • Capsule of the probiotic L. acidophilus containing two billion to four billion organisms. Open capsule and pour in contents.
  • 1 Tablespoon flaxseed oil
  • 20 grams whey, rice protein powder or egg protein powder. (Most protein powders come with a 20-gram scoop that makes it easy to measure.)

Mix in a blender. Makes about two to three cups.
