Airlines are required to allow service dogs and registered emotional-support animals in passenger cabins. Many airlines allow other pets there, too (though often in limited numbers). This can be a real problem if you are allergic. To minimize exposure…

1. Before booking a flight, find out whether an airline allows animals in the cabin, how many are permitted and whether any are already booked on the flight. When possible, opt for the airlines and flights with the least exposure.

2. Tell the reservations agent that you have severe allergies and must be seated as far as possible from any pets. Also tell this to a flight attendant when you board.

3. Ask your physician whether you should take an oral antihistamine an hour or so before a flight. Also: You now are allowed to bring an EpiPen or other auto-injector onboard.

4. Use disposable wipes to clear surface allergens from seats and trays.
