Reports of stolen dogs increased by 49% in the US in the first seven months of 2011. Dogs have been taken from homes, pet stores, shelters, cars and parks. Some thieves sell the dogs. Others pretend to have found them after the owner offers a reward. Small breeds are abducted more often than others, but dogs of all sizes have been taken. Self-defense: Always keep your dog on a leash…never leave a dog unattended outside a store…do not brag about a dog’s breed or price…take photos that you can give to police, neighbors and shelters if your dog goes missing…ask your vet about having a pet-identifying microchip implanted in your dog.
