If the smells emanating from your dishwasher have been a little on the foul side lately, here’s what to do…

If your dishwasher has a musty smell—and it probably will if you keep it closed most of the time—empty it, then pour one-quarter cup of lemon juice or two tablespoons of baking soda in the detergent dispenser. Let it run through the rinse cycle.

Keeping your dishwasher sealed tight all the time may create some patches of mold or residue on the interior. Simply wipe the slime away with baking soda on a sponge. Oh, and keep the door slightly open between loads to keep it smelling sweet and clean.

Hint: The presqueezed lemon juice in bottles at your grocery store—the stuff that most TV chefs tell you to never use in recipes—works well for cleaning…smells great and no squeezing! And a small bottle of juice usually ends up being less expensive than buying a bunch of lemons.
