Over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone reduces the swelling, soreness and flaking of severely chapped lips. Use it three or four times a day for one week. After applying the cortisone cream, use an unflavored lip balm containing a moisture-locking agent, such as petrolatum or beeswax, to seal in the moisture better. If symptoms continue for more than one week, contact your dermatologist. The steroid cream does not have a good taste, but it shouldn’t harm you if you taste some.
