We don’t mean to gross you out, but the bacteria and food particles in your mouth right now can cause cavities, gum problems and bad breath. Aside from diligent brushing and flossing, here are some plaque repellents to eat and drink after meals…

  • Eat an apple.
  • Eat a few strawberries…not dipped in chocolate!
  • Eat aged cheeses, especially after eating sugary food or drinking cola. The cheese must be aged—cheddar, Swiss and Monterey Jack are best. Eating a half-ounce is adequate.
  • Drink green tea. It’s a great antioxidant and beneficial in so many ways, including as a plaque repellent.
  • Chew sugarless gum for at least 10 minutes after you’ve eaten. It will produce saliva that will counterbalance the acid in the plaque. According to researchers at Indiana University School of Dentistry, the potential for tooth decay decreased by an average 72% when patients chewed gum after eating.
