To make lettuce last longer, take it out of its plastic bag and store it in a brown paper bag—this will allow moisture to escape. And do not store lettuce with apples, pears or bananas in the same refrigerator bin. (You can store ripe bananas in the refrigerator, by the way.) Their ripening gases will cause the lettuce to turn brown and yucky.
