Cars aren’t the only possessions that need regular maintenance. Bill Keith shares maintenance tips to keep your home in tip-top shape.

  • Test the automatic garage door monthly to be sure that it reverses when it hits something.
  • Vacuum the clothes dryer’s exhaust duct at least yearly — replace it if it’s cracked or worn.
  • Replace furnace filters every three months, or as recommended by the furnace manufacturer.
  • Test outlets with ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) monthly by pressing the test button and using a voltage tester to be sure the power goes off.
  • Remove leaves and debris from the central air-conditioning unit and rain gutters seasonally.
  • Have the fireplace cleaned and inspected annually.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year. Replace batteries annually.
