• Protect your heart: High heat and humidity are risky for people with heart disease. If your doctor approves, drink a glass of water every hour. Eat only small meals. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Be alert to signs of heat illness, such as confusion, fatigue, headache, muscle twitches, nausea and/or vomiting.
  • Prevent mosquito and tick bites: The most effective repellents contain 30% oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under age three) or 20% picaridin.
  • Go “mothing”: National Moth Week is July 18 to 26. Hang out a white sheet to attract, observe and photograph the nocturnal insects. Or lure them by painting trees with a mix of overripe fruit, brown sugar and stale beer. No specific amounts are required.
  • Stay safe at the shore: Before your trip, check rip current reports (RipCurrents.NOAA.gov/forecasts.shtml). If you hear thunder, leave the beach and don’t return for at least 30 minutes after the last clap.
  • Have a safe 4th: Don’t buy fireworks that lack a manufacturer’s name or instructions. Light only one at a time. Don’t relight duds. Soak used fireworks, including duds, before disposal.
