  • Stay awake on the road: Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is November 2 to 9. If you have difficulty focusing or staying awake, stop for coffee and take a 20-minute nap.
  • Watch out for deer: Autumn is peak time for deer-car collisions, especially between 6 pm and 9 pm. Use high beams at night unless there is oncoming traffic. Slow down when you see a deer, but do not swerve because other deer are likely to be nearby. Turn on hazard lights to warn other drivers.
  • Fine-tune your furnace: Have your heating system checked before the weather turns cold. Also: Cover the outsides of air conditioners with plastic. Drain and store hoses. Check snow shovels/blowers and your supply of ice-melting products.
  • Give thanks: Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 27. Start a gratitude journal to remember people, experiences, places and things that have blessed your life.
  • Spend your dollars locally: November 29 is Small Business Saturday—a day to shop in independently owned stores.
