Did you know that today is Dictionary Day? It’s in honor of Noah Webster’s birthday. He’s the genius who published the first dictionary, and our favorite edition still bears his name. Here’s what to do to celebrate (aside from starting a parade)…

• Have an evening of dictionary games that involve spelling and word knowledge—Scrabble, Boggle, Balderdash are some favorites to play with family and friends. If you don’t feel like socializing, dig out a few crossword puzzles from the newspaper and time yourself.

• Learn some new words! Flip through the dictionary, and select 20 (or more, whatever you like) pages…spot check each page and pick a word or two you don’t know. Commit to keeping a list of unusual words you hear or read (stop and take note on your phone), and at the end of the day, pull out your list and check Webster’s for the exact definition. Or, even easier, you can join this site that e-mails you a new word each day.

• Spiff up your spelling. Unless you’re a spelling bee champ, there are probably a few words you still stumble over. Make a list of all the words you usually need to look up to spell. If you need some help, we like this list. Practice writing each stumper numerous times (say, 20). If you’re helping a young lexicographer with spelling homework, have him/her quiz you back!
