The problem with laryngitis is that it’s hard to ask for help! If you’ve got a bout of hoarse vocal cords, give them a rest. If you must talk, try to speak carefully in a normal tone rather than whispering—whispering tightens the muscles of your voice box and puts more stress on your vocal cords than when you speak normally. And now, here’s a natural remedy to get your voice back in no time: It’s based on a popular Russian remedy known as “singer’s sore throat.” But you don’t have to be a singer to use this remedy for your laryngitis. Mix one-half cup of anise seeds with one cup of water, and bring to a slight boil. Lower the heat, and let simmer slowly uncovered for 45 minutes. Strain, then stir one-quarter cup of raw honey into the remaining anise-seed water. Take one to two tablespoons every half hour, brewing more as needed. You’ll be singing like a star in a day or two.
