Despite all of the warnings about the dangers associated with artificial sweeteners, nutrition and fitness expert Janet Bond Brill, PhD, RDN, FAND, LDN, still supports their use. The reason for this is simple—she believes the health risks from added sugar are far greater than those posed by artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners such as Stevia and sucralose are made directly from natural plant materials, so Dr. Bond Brill does not share the common concerns about these substances. Whatever side effects these may have, she argues, ultimately pale next to the heart disease risks posed by too much real sugar.
