In this video, Marc Grossman, OD, LAc, holistic developmental/behavioral optometrist and licensed acupuncturist, explains the differences between opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists. Opticians are concerned with the lenses in glasses—they are the doctors who actually grind lenses when you fill your prescription. Optometrists write eyeglass prescriptions and diagnose and treat some eye diseases. They attend a four-year program and receive a doctorate in optometry. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors whose specialty is the eye. Like optometrists, they also diagnose and treat eye diseases, and they can perform surgery when required. Dr. Grossman urges people to choose the eye specialist whose experience matches their needs.
