Currently, there is a shocking epidemic of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men in their 20s. Dr. Geo Espinosa, ND, LAc, IFMCP, CNS, clinical assistant professor of integrative and functional urology at New York University and author of Thrive—Don’t Survive: Dr. Geo’s Guide to Living Your Best Life Before & After Prostate Cancer, regularly treats patients with ED, and 50% of those patients are under the age of 30. Recent studies have associated ED with excessive viewing of pornography, which can lead to unrealistic ideas about sex, intimacy and anatomy. The performance anxiety that results can cause a release of adrenaline that in turn constricts blood vessels and makes it more difficult for men to achieve and maintain an erection. Other potential causes of ED in younger men include work-related stress, poor diet and increased estrogen levels.
