Women in labor are often not permitted to eat or drink because if they wind up needing general anesthesia for a C-section, there’s a risk for serious complications if the stomach’s contents are regurgitated and then inhaled.

Good news for most hungry moms-to-be: In a recent review of five studies, researchers found no benefit in restricting food or drink among women at low risk for labor complications. Best: Discuss your preferences and your risks with your obstetrician.
