Cookies get stale too quickly in those manufactured wraps that are hard to reclose. Here’s what to do…

Transfer your store-bought cookies to a plastic container with an airtight seal. Place a slice of bread or apple slice in the container and your cookies will keep fresher longer. The bread or apple slice will also soften stale cookies just starting to go south.

Works for cake, too: Place a slice of bread up against each already-cut-and-exposed side of the cake. Keep the slices in place with toothpicks. The bread will probably get stale, but the cake will be moist and taste fine.

If your cookies are crisp: Crumple up a piece of tissue paper, and place it on the bottom of the cookie container. This allows limited airflow to enhance crispness. Keep the cookies on top of the tissue, and be sure the container stays closed—except when you’re taking out a crisp cookie to enjoy.

You can do any of these stay-fresh tips with homemade cookies, too, but we’ve never known a batch of homemade cookies to last long enough to go stale!
