Forget the lists…forget the prefab shelving…forget the “one drawer at a time.” If you have been bitten by the spring-cleaning bug, we challenge you to do this…

Take a day, any day. It could be a Saturday, Sunday, vacation-day Friday…and start at the very top of your home. Investigate every corner, closet, book shelf and drawer. Pick up every item, piece of clothing, envelope, book, whatever and ask Do I want this or not want? If you do not want it, create a donate pile. If it’s trash, create a recycle pile. If it’s something someone might pay for, create a sell-me-online pile. Do not stop until you reach the most far-removed section of your basement. This is so cathartic, you’ll want to do it once every year. Oh, and if you have housemates, be sure to ask the owner of the item that you consider clutter if it can be discarded or sold!

Vacuum or sweep the empty spaces, and let your decorating ideas run wild.
