If you lack counter space for a knife block and wall space for those hanging-knife-magnet thingies, your drawer is a good place to store your cutters. But you don’t want those blades floating around unprotected…the sharp edges will get damaged and possibly damage someone looking for a knife! Here’s what to do…

You can make easy sleeves for knives with empty paper towel rolls—they’re wide enough to fit even large chef knives. How to do it: Flatten the cardboard roll, insert the knife into one of the open ends and clip the bottom edge of the knife to the bottom of the roll with a binder clip. You can cut the top of the roll off and slip this extra bit over a paring knife. The sleeves will protect the knife blades as well as your fingers. Remember to save those paper towel tubes!
