Bottom Line/HEALTH:What’s the easiest way for someone to start exercise and stick with it? As we said, people have barriers to exercising when they haven’t done it before. So how do we get them off the couch to start?
Osama Hamdy, MD, PhDVery slow, very easily, short durations over the day, and then over time, increase that. The most important thing is to make it a routine. And the best way to make it a routine in your day is to link it so another routine. I’m eating my lunch, then I will walk. So every time you eat your lunch, you will walk for 10 minutes. Every time you sit in front of the TV, you have your stretchy band. So make it a routine, make it easy, make it simple and start gradually and increase.
Bottom Line:And then as we said, there was a follow-up question, which again was about the best time of day. But as you have said, exercising multiple times a day actually is better.
Hamdy:It is much better if they do 10 minutes in the morning, flexibility or stretching…10 minutes walking at lunch…10 minutes with a stretchy band, resistant exercise with some weights will be fine. If they do another 10 minutes any other time, it will be even better.
