People took 8 percent more steps during the workday when they dressed casually in jeans than when they wore business attire. The additional steps—491 per day, on average, as measured by pedometers—burned an extra 25 calories daily, or the equivalent of about 1.8 pounds of body weight per year.

Bottom line: The average American adult gains 0.4 to 1.8 pounds yearly. Dressing casually encourages increased physical activity that could more than offset this weight gain.
