It’s good news that more Americans are replacing sugary drinks with water, but the disposable plastic bottles that are so ubiquitous these days aren’t always good for your health or your wallet. Tap water is a cheap alternative and doesn’t contain the chemical BPA (bisphenol-A) that’s still found in some disposable plastic bottles. But the taste of tap water can vary from place to place, and it can contain toxins. The answer? Portable water bottles with built-in filters. My favorites…*

CamelBak Groove. The plant-based carbon filter used with this water bottle reduces chlorine taste and odors found in tap water—but not viruses, bacteria or protozoa. The stainless steel version comes in two colors, and its bite valve seals automatically. The Groove also comes with a handy loop handle, making it easy for carrying around. Where to buy: CamelBak.com. Cost: 20-ounce stainless steel, $30…six-pack replacement filters, $25.

Brita Hard Sided Bottle. The portable Brita bottle reduces chlorine and odors and produces remarkably good-tasting water. Made from BPA-free plastic, it’s durable and dishwasher safe and fits in most car cup holders. Where to buy: Brita.com. Cost: 26-ounce, $24.99…two-pack replacement filters, $6.88.
