Many teens struggle with acne. Expert nutritionist and skincare guru Ginger Hodulik Downey, MS, CNS, discusses dietary changes that teens can make to help with this problem. First, she counsels teens to avoid dairy products—these contain hormones that can cause skin problems, particularly in girls. It is a myth that organic dairy products solve this issue… even organic products contain these hormones. Sugar (particularly in its refined form) also should be avoided to prevent acne. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, is good for preventing acne. This includes fish, flaxseed and certain nuts as well as fish oil supplements. Garlic, onions and mushrooms also are good for preventing pimples and breakouts.
