It’s time to talk Christmas trees! If your answer to the main Christmas tree question is “real” over “fake,” then read on for some advice on buying the healthiest tree and keeping it fresh and vivid…

Guaranteed fresh: For any species, if the tree is fresh, the needles will stay on the branch and not fall off if you touch them (remember Charlie Brown’s pick). If you’re buying a balsam fir, gently bend a needle between your thumb and forefinger. If the tree is fresh, the needle will break. If you’re buying a pine tree, the needle should NOT break (if you want a fresh, healthy tree, that is).

Bacteria blocker: The first time you water your tree, use hot water—about 80°F. Add two ounces of antibacterial mouthwash to the residual water in the base stand to prevent the growth of any unwanted bacteria, which can block the tree’s ability to drink.

Sweet treat: A week or so after you buy your tree, give it a pick-me-up by adding one ounce (two tablespoons) of maple syrup to its water. The syrup’s sugar feeds the tree and makes the needles a more vibrant green. It can help it last longer, too.
