Some women sail through menopause with barely a blip to their physical or mental well-being. But others suffer mightily from hot flashes, mood swings, “brain fog,” painful sex and other symptoms…and unfortunately, the “solutions” offered by medical science tend to be a mixed bag of pros and cons.

For instance, the FDA recently approved the medication ospemifene (Osphena) to relieve painful sex caused by menopausal changesbut the drug causes hot flashes, which menopausal women definitely don’t need! On top of that, a large 13-year study now confirms that estrogen therapy, which does relieve vaginal dryness and hot flashes, should be used only short-term and if symptoms are severe, because otherwise the risks outweigh the benefits.

So what’s a sweaty, moody, foggy-headed but still potentially passionate middle-aged woman to do?
