Held in New York City every year, the Fancy Food Show shows off new foods that we will be seeing on supermarket shelves soon. This year’s trends were sustainability and health. Here are our Bottom Line expert Linda Gassenheimer’s favorite products…
Confetti Chips. These minimally processed veggie chips are baked using fresh but imperfect produce—fruits and vegetables that are unsellable due to their irregular shape, size or visual anomalies. Flavors include Mushroom Chips (with Green Curry or Black Truffle flavors) and Veggie Chips (with Teriyaki BBQ, Tandoori Curry or Summer Truffle flavors). $4.99 for a 2.46-ounce bag.
Yoggies by Nature’s Garden. For this probiotic snack, real strawberry fruit bits are coated with creamy yogurt to form delicious hard-candy–like balls. A 20-gram bag has only 90 calories. $26 for a package of 30 individual servings.
For Good Granola. This gluten-free nutrient-rich granola is made with buckwheat, not oats. Enjoy it as a cereal…use it in baking or to top baked goods. There are six grams of sugar in each quarter-cup serving. $11.40 for a 10-ounce bag.
Salute Santé Grapeseed Oil and Flour. The antioxidant-rich oil is made from leftover pomace—the pulpy matter that remains after the grapes are pressed for wine. It has a fresh, fruity flavor. The oil is good for cooking, salad dressing and anywhere you would use other oils. The pomace also is used to make grapeseed flour, which is rich in antioxidants and potassium. The flour can be added to fruit breads, muffins and even homemade pizza to add a nutty taste and a crisp texture…and it is a nutritious addition to smoothies. $16.50 for a 750-ml bottle of oil…$12 for a one-pound bag of flour.
Spare Tonic is a four-ingredient sparkling drink made with upcycled whey left over from the production of Greek-style yogurt. It comes in four flavors—blueberry and ginger…passionfruit and yuzu…cucumber and lime…and lemon ginger. Sugar content ranges from 16 to 22 grams. $3.99 per 12-ounce can.
