QUESTION

My father sometimes falls. How can I tell if he’s had a concussion?

ANSWER

A concussion is typically diagnosed based on symptoms such as headache, blurred vision or confusion—sometimes hours or days after a head injury. If your father has taken a hard fall, can’t recall events before or after a fall, loses consciousness (even briefly) or shows behavioral changes, take him to the emergency department, where he will undergo neurological tests, along with a CT scan or MRI to see if there is any injury to the brain. If symptoms continue, neuropsychological testing by a neuropsychologist who specializes in brain injury can accurately diagnose a concussion.
