Grilling season is about to start, and we want to share a true story and some timely advice from renowned dermatologist Neal Schultz, MD.

A man suffered severe burns just after he used a sunscreen spray. He was standing near the open flame of a backyard grill. This freak accident could have happened with most aerosol products (antiperspirants, insect repellants, for example) used near an open flame. To be fair, that’s why they are labeled “flammable.”

This may seem obvious, but we ask readers to mind Dr. Schultz’s three rules for using any spray-on product:

  • Protect yourself from inhaling it
  • Prevent contact with your lips and eyes
  • Wait two minutes before going near an open flame.

Dr. Schultz is a cosmetic dermatologist in private practice in New York City and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City, and coauthor of It’s Not Just About Wrinkles (Abrams). www.NealSchultzMD.com
