Jessie Gruman, PhD, is founder and president of the Center for Advancing Health, a policy institute, and a professorial lecturer at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, both in Washington, DC. A social psychologist, she also is the author of four books, including AfterShock: What to Do When the Doctor Gives You—or Someone You Love—a Devastating Diagnosis (Walker).
